The "Gothic Subculture"

21:41 May 31 2007
Times Read: 542

For me, its really hard to define this gothic movement without actually labeling everyone, as well as myself as a "Goth". I really can't stand the word, but its easier to say to people than explain everything that it is.

Like for example;

"Are you gothic?"

I simply say yes, rather than confusing thier simple little minds by saying "No, i'm just a different kind of person who wears black."

But theres just so much more to wearing the color.

There are alot of posers at my school, who go around saying that they're gothic. It makes the others who have been dressing this way for far longer than they, look bad.

There are also people who make fun of us, yet sit in the same spot with us at lunch or in the cafeteria in the morning before the bell rings.

They say "Goths think they're being different by dressing this way, but really they're no different than the preps they say they despise so much. They all look exactly the same."

And I say to them is there is no individuality left in the world, sadly. There is no such thing as a nonconformist, even if they were to walk around completely naked, they'd still be following the nudist movement. And what this all boils down to is that I dress this way not to be different, not to be cool, not becuase I want people to be scared of me and cower in my presence (little do most goths know is people laugh and scoff at them behind their back) I dress this way because the standards of normal in society today do not satisfy my need to be creative. I have a longing and craving for weird and unusual things that normally, most people aren't interested in at all. Also, because these standards of normallcy today sheild and sugar coat the things they do not want to see, or want thier children to be associated with. Like, death, drugs, and sex. I dress this way to also, emphasize these things, and remind people that it is always there, and you cannot escape it. And when people get to know me, they realize that I am not a creepy satanist who cuts off goat tesitcles for my full moon rituals, and they find I don't drink blood and cast spells on people. I am normal enough for them. The outside does not matter.
